Mark and Margaret Berzins

Leaving a Legacy in So Many Ways

Mark Berzins is a true believer in doing his part to help Metro Denver be a strong and vibrant community. As one of the founding members of SVP Denver (Social Venture Partners), Mark has always cared deeply about and spends countless hours helping nonprofit organizations that he also contributes to financially. Mark just finished two terms as a member of The Denver Foundation’s Board of Trustees. Both Mark and his wife Margaret are Colorado natives and long-time supporters of the arts and education.

Mark recently recounted a time that was particularly touching to him early in his involvement with SVP. SVP was supporting an arts enrichment program for low-income students at the Center for Visual Arts at Metropolitan State College of Denver. Mark described how excited the kids became, shouting with joy at the sight of the “arts truck” coming down the street. He said he was “blown away” by the kids’ excitement and gratitude for an opportunity to create art.

Mark often talks about donning his “do-gooder cape” to support the most vulnerable in our society, both with family and through his business donor-advised fund, the Little Pub Fund. In the spring of 2011, the Little Pub Fund provided a matching grant of 50 cents for every dollar raised to support The Denver Foundation’s Campaign for Hunger Relief. Thanks to that online giving campaign, the Foundation distributed over $30,000 in grants to front-line food pantries and summer food sites last May.

Margaret and Mark are committed to passing on their charitable spirit and love of the arts to their four children. In fact, one of their daughters, Clare, recently curated a show of some exceptional art produced by students at East High School. Mark and Margaret have arranged for their children to become the primary advisors to the Little Pub Fund in the future.

To show their commitment to the future, Mark and Margaret have also named The Denver Foundation as a charitable beneficiary of their estate in their wills.

This is a testament to the community, and an honor for The Denver Foundation.
