The Peotter Family
Giving Generations Foundation, Supporting Higher Education
It was their interest in supporting students in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program in the Cherry Creek School District that drove Jeff and Linda Peotter family to establish The Giving Generation AVID Graduate with Distinction Scholarship Fund. The AVID Program, which exists in several Metro Denver area schools, helps students succeed in a rigorous academic environment, while encouraging and preparing them to attend four-year colleges upon graduation. The program begins in middle school and attracts students who show academic promise, but need extra support in study skills, time management, and school preparation.
The couple have been true champions of supporting students who are taking the necessary steps to improve their chances for academic success. Through various volunteer engagements, they witnessed students who were not prepared to attend and succeed in college because they lacked the necessary skills, and subsequently made the decision to invest in students who participate in the AVID program in Cherry Creek. “The Cherry Creek AVID students are determined to make a better life for themselves. The program provides an environment for students who need the extra push to succeed and reach their full potential, both in grades and school activities, and then, in many cases, to be the first in their family to attend college. We feel so lucky to be involved with such wonderful students,” says Linda. “The students we have supported over the past several years have made us proud of our investment.”
Nathan Brown, a rising junior at University of Denver, was selected to receive a scholarship in 2009. “I feel fortunate to not only have been able to participate in the AVID program at Overland High School because it provided me with the skills and resources to be a successful student in high school, and now college, but also to be recognized for my efforts by receiving a scholarship through this fund. The Giving Generations Scholorship has helped me realize my dream of going to college; I am grateful to the foundation for their visionary leadership and generosity.” Nathan is now also serving as an intern at The Denver Foundation through the Nonprofit Internship Program.
Since The Giving Generation AVID Graduate with Distinction Scholarship Fund was established at The Denver Foundation in 2004, the program has supported several students from various high schools in the Cherry Creek School District.
