Mary and George Sissel
Community Leaders and Foundation Friends
Mary and George Sissel bring a combination of passion and discipline to everything they do. From professional experience to volunteer commitments to family life, they care deeply, give generously, and set a high standard of engagement.
“We both grew up in families where philanthropy was an important part of life. It’s certainly rewarding now to see our children wanting to instill that same spirit in our grandchildren.”
A retired Chairman and CEO of Ball Corporation, George has provided support and service to the University of Colorado and its Foundation. He also serves on the Advisory Council of the Denver School of Science and Technology, the board of Rocky Mountain PBS, and as a volunteer for the Iliff School of Theology.
Mary focuses her efforts on helping women and girls as Chair of the University of Colorado’s Center for Women’s Health Research and as past Chair of the Women’s Foundation of Colorado. More recently, she has taken up the cause of Craig Hospital, serving on the Board of the Craig Hospital Foundation. Mary is a past Chair of The Denver Foundation Board of Trustees.
In addition to making a difference today, the Sissels are extending their philanthropic legacy through their own children. They have a family donor-advised fund at The Denver Foundation, and, by virtue of their planned bequest to that fund, they are members of the Foundation’s Community Legacy Society. “Our son and daughter are on the Fund Advisory Committee, and together we recommend grants to support organizations of mutual concern.” They attend Foundation-sponsored donor education and information sessions together when possible.
The Denver community is fortunate to count Mary and George Sissel among its leading citizens and philanthropists, and The Denver Foundation is grateful for the Sissels’ partnership and friendship.
