Nonprofit Internship Program

2009 Interns

The Denver Foundation’s Nonprofit Internship Program will continue for a fourth summer in 2010 – and now is the time to encourage college students to apply!  This Program provides motivated, highly-qualified college students with meaningful paid summer positions within Metro Denver nonprofit organizations.

An independent evaluation of the 2009 program, conducted by the OMNI Institute, indicated several benefits to the student interns and organizations participating.  The organizations hosting the interns reported that the unique perspectives and skills of their interns helped to enhance the programming of their organizations. The staff directly supervising the interns also noted their interns’ passion, enthusiasm, dedication, and ability to think creatively.

By participating in the program, interns reported an increase in their overall understanding of nonprofit organizations, including breadth, structure, mission, and governance.  Additionally, interns noted that their perspectives on the sector were broadened and they were able to see beyond common stereotypes.  Finally, the evaluators wrote: “Interns believe that the knowledge and skills they have obtained have opened many doors for them which will be essential to their future careers.”  Plus, all ten interns reported that they had fun!

We are actively recruiting students to apply to the program for summer 2010. Ten nonprofit organizations will each select a student to intern with them.  Our goal is to provide each organization with a broadly diverse pool of candidates to interview for their internship position.  Eligible students must, at a minimum:

•  Attend a two- or four-year college or university in Metro Denver (Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, and Jefferson counties), or live in one of the seven counties of Metro Denver and attend school elsewhere
•  Be a current undergraduate
•  Have at least a 2.5 GPA
•  Have completed the equivalent of at least 12 semester credits

The deadline for students to apply is Friday, January 22, 2010.  If you know students who may be interested in this program, please direct them to the Nonprofit Internship Program website: http://www.denverfoundation.org/page10001707.cfm or have them contact Holly Kingsbury at hkingsbury@denverfoundation.org or 303.300.1790 ext. 147.
