"Kevin started as a volunteer member of the steering committee for our Inclusiveness Project back when it was still an initiative," said Lauren Casteel. "He was unbelievably committed to this work with his heart, his intelligence, and his passion."
The Denver Foundation shares the community's sorrow, as on Saturday, June 13, 2009, Kevin D. May, MNM passed away at the age of 41 after a five-year battle with colon cancer. Kevin is survived by his wife Angela Denise May an daughters Bria Iman May and Aisha Imari May all of Denver, his mother Patricia Caraway and sister Pamela Mshana of Ontario California, and grandmother Malinda Spotville of Denver.
Kevin was born in Montclair, California and came to Colorado to attend the University of Colorado on a full athletic scholarship, playing football for the CU Buffaloes. He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the CU's Leeds School of Business. He also held a Master's degree in Nonprofit Management from Regis University, where he was a Colorado Trust Fellow.
Kevin was the founder and president of Ascent Human & Organizational Development Co., through which he helped uncover the authentic leadership ability and natural giftedness that often lie dormant in people and organizations. He also served as an affiliate professor at Regis University in the Master of Nonprofit Management program where he taught leadership and spiritual development. In honor of his dedication and commitment to his students, Kevin was presented with the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2007.
A generous and beloved community leader, Kevin volunteered as a member of the steering committee for The Denver Foundation's Inclusiveness Project for over seven years, serving as a co-author of the book Inclusiveness at Work. "He was unbelievably good at what he did," said his friend and colleague Mike Johnson, executive director of Project PAVE who served with Kevin on the Inclusiveness Project steering committee.
Contributions in Kevin's memory can be made to the May Donation Fund, Public Service Credit Union, 7055 E. Evans Ave., Denver CO 80224, or to C3 - Colorectal Cancer Coalition, 1414 Prince Street, Suite 204, Alexandria, VA 22314, on behalf of the Kevin May family.
