David J. Miller President & CEO

David is a fifth-generation Denverite on both sides of his family.  He is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, Harvard College and Harvard Law School.

Upon returning to Denver in 1979, David worked for ten years in state and city government.  He served as Executive Director of the Colorado Office of State Planning and Budgeting and as a member of the Governor’s Cabinet.  Later, he was chief of staff for Denver Mayor Federico Pena.

In 1989, David became a named principal in the strategic communications consulting firm of GBSM (Greenberg, Baron, Simon & Miller).  As a consultant, his clients included major national corporations, nonprofit organizations and foundations.  David has worked extensively with The Hunt Alternatives Fund and served as vice president.

He was appointed Executive Director of The Denver Foundation in 1996.  During his tenure, the Foundation's endowment has grown from $48.5 million in 1995 to more than $380 million today. In 2001, the Board of Trustees changed the organization’s titles to reflect those of corporations, and thus his title became President & CEO.

Established in 1925, The Denver Foundation is a community foundation -- a permanent pool of money contributed by donors to benefit a specific geographic area. The Denver Foundation serves the seven counties of Metro Denver and works to improve life through philanthropy, community and leadership. In 2005, the Foundation gave away $27 million in grants to nonprofit organizations.
