Nonprofit Internship Program

The Denver Foundation's Nonprofit Internship Program strives to engage young people, especially those from populations traditionally underrepresented in the nonprofit sector, by offering meaningful summer internship opportunities with Metro Denver nonprofit organizations.

The goals of the Nonprofit Internship Program are to:

        *    Provide students with meaningful exposure to opportunities within the nonprofit sector
        *    Encourage motivated, highly-qualified students from communities traditionally
underrepresented in the nonprofit sector to pursue deeper involvement in the sector
        *    Develop the leadership capacity of undergraduate students
        *    Build capacity within nonprofit organizations by providing additional staff support

The Denver Foundation is pleased to announce the continuation of the Nonprofit Internship Program for its fourth year.  The deadline for nonprofit organizations to apply to host a student intern in the summer of 2010 has passed.

HISTORY
The Denver Foundation's Nonprofit Internship Program was inspired by findings from the Inclusiveness Project that internships help encourage individuals of color to pursue opportunities in the nonprofit sector.  In May 2006, The Denver Foundation conducted a survey with college students and young nonprofit professionals about how nonprofits can better connect with people of color.  Of the 112 respondents (all who identified as individuals of color), 95% thought it would be useful for nonprofits to do more outreach to people of color about opportunities for work or leadership in the nonprofit sector and 90% expressed interest in internship opportunities within the nonprofit sector.  In response to these findings, the Philanthropic Partnerships department established the Nonprofit Internship Program in the summer of 2007.

Each summer, interns partner with existing Community Grants Program grantees for a ten-week internship.  Internships are engaging opportunities that will expose students to several aspects of the work of a nonprofit organization, such as programmatic work, fundraising, governance, etc.  Host organizations must have a clearly articulated commitment to building inclusiveness and diversity, and be engaged in strategies to become more inclusive as an organization.

»   "This program was not only a rare opportunity, but a personal watershed in terms of how I think
about nonprofits and my future in the sector."
